Mannberg in the Rheingau
The Mannberg is a wine-growing site in the Rheingau within the municipal area of Eltville am Rhein. According to the register of wine-growing sites, the single site covers 6.1 hectares.
Site and soils
The south-facing site has a slope of around 18 to 27 per cent. Its deep, calcareous loess soils are complemented by documented water-bearing zones which provide the vines with water even in dry years.
Grape variety and wine character
For the single site, Riesling is documented. The wines are described as full-bodied, fruity and spicy. In addition, a firm acidity is mentioned; at first they can seem closed, and then open up aromatically.
Historical development
A feudal document from 1464 attests to the transfer of the vineyard, then called “Mannwerk”, by the Elector Ludwig to Johann Langwerth of Simmern. Historically, the site was for the most part owned by the Langwerth of Simmern winery. In 2018, parts of the Rheingau vineyard holdings, including parts of the Mannberg, were leased to other wineries; the remaining part belongs to the Hessian State Wineries.
