Location and Classification
Mandelberg is a legally registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the Neustadt an der Weinstraße district of Duttweiler at Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the Pfalz. It belongs to the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area and is listed in the 2024 vintage register as a single vineyard within the Großlage Pfaffengrund under the wine-growing site number 821004.
Topography and Soils
The Duttweiler section of Mandelberg extends over the southern side of a ridge that runs from east to west. The south-facing site is at about 130 to 135 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of roughly five percent or less. The soil consists of loess; in the subsoil lies calcareous marl. Both layers have good water-retention capacity.
Climate and Vineyard Area
Duttweiler lies in a climatically favoured belt between the Rhine plain and the Pfälzerwald. The Pfälzerwald protects against prevailing weather influences. In the Duttweiler cadastral area, a total of 78.1 hectares planted with vines were recorded in the 2024 wine-growing site register.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
In the Duttweiler Mandelberg, Spätburgunder and Riesling are grown. For the VDP classification, Weißer Burgunder and Chardonnay are listed as permitted classified grape varieties. The calcareous influence can, with bottle ageing, contribute aromas of ripe mirabelle and peach to the wines. The VDP lists Duttweiler Mandelberg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; this private classification is to be distinguished from the statutory German wine-growing site designation.
