Location and Landscape
The Magdalenenkreuz is a vineyard site in Rüdesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau. The gently rising hillside, for the most part facing south, stretches westwards in the direction of Geisenheim and looks out over the Rhine towards Bingen. It lies at 100 to 150 metres above sea level; the slope gradient is 5 to 30 percent.
Soil and Water Supply
The soils are described as calcareous loess as well as sandy loess loam with loess subsoils. In the lower part of the site, a high groundwater level also ensures the availability of water in dry years.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
For the classified area covering 33.00 hectares, Riesling and Spätburgunder are specified. The wines from the Magdalenenkreuz are described as powerful, sustainable and fruity; documented, among other things, is a Riesling Spätlese fine semi-dry.
Name and Classification
The name is derived from a wayside shrine group with Mary Magdalene, which was located at this place in the past. The Magdalenenkreuz is entered in the Hessian directory of wine sites as a named single vineyard and is managed by the VDP as Rüdesheimer Magdalenenkreuz, VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
