Location and classification
The Mäushöhle is an officially registered single-vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Deidesheim in the Palatinate. It belongs to the winegrowing region Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße and to the Großlage Mariengarten. The 2024 vineyard register lists an area of 24.2 hectares.
Topography and soils
The slope lies at around 125 to 180 metres above sea level and rises towards the Kieselberg plateau. It is located in a protected, elongated hollow that opens to the east. Documented are sandy loam, loess and loess-derived loam, locally stony material, sandy loam, weathered Bunter sandstone and, in places, weathered limestone. Bunter sandstone is considered an essential geological component.
Climate and water balance
The Haardt protects the site from excessive rainfall and wind. Due to the slope, cold air can drain off towards the Rhine plain, reducing the risk of early frosts. The hollow and an associated water ditch are linked with local effects on the water supply within the vineyard site.
Name and wines
The name has been documented since around 1208 in the form “Musehelde” and is traced back to a personal name. Riesling is grown in the Mäushöhle. Descriptions of corresponding wines mention dry wines with precise or firm acidity, cool notes of apple and herbal notes. The site is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; in addition, it is listed in the vineyard sites register as a single-vineyard site.
