Location and Topography
Leiterchen is a vineyard site in Trittenheim on the Mosel. It lies opposite the town centre and within the superior site of Trittenheimer Apotheke. The official register of vineyard sites lists Leiterchen as a single vineyard under number 410427 in the Bernkastel area, within the Grosslage of Michelsberg, and in the cadastral district of Trittenheim.
The site, which faces south-west, is at around 120 to 220 metres above sea level. The slope gradient is approximately 70 per cent and reaches up to 75 per cent in individual places. Leiterchen comprises steep vineyard terraces.
Soil and Cultivation
The subsoil consists of grey and blue Devonian slate with a high proportion of slate stones and slate-containing material. The terraces have high exposure to sunshine, warm summers and comparatively mild winters. Owing to their steepness and the stony subsoil, they dry off quickly after moisture.
Riesling is given as the classified grape variety. The site is held exclusively by the Milz-Laurentiushof winery and is presented today by the Josef Milz winery. For Leiterchen, vines with an age of more than 90 years are indicated.
History and Classification
The name Leiterchen is traced back to iron ladders that were once set into the terraces and enabled access to higher-lying vineyard levels. The site is documented on a historical wine-growing map of the Mosel from 1906.
The VDP lists Leiterchen in Trittenheim as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
The classified area is 1.31 acres, corresponding to about 0.53 hectares.
