Leiterchen is a named single vineyard site in Nittel on the Upper Moselle, above the left bank of the Moselle and close to the Luxembourg border. Listed as an official single vineyard, the wine-growing site consists of a steep slope running parallel to the river. The documented areas are predominantly orientated to the south to south-west.
Soil and climate
The wine-growing site is associated with dolomite and limestone rock faces and with the Muschelkalk terroir of Nittel. For Leiterchen, a microclimate shaped by the dolomite and limestone rock faces is described; Nittel also has a microclimate influenced by the Mediterranean.
Grape varieties and wine style
Elbling and Pinot varieties are documented for wines from Nitteler Leiterchen. These include, among others, White Pinot, Spätburgunder and Chardonnay. The Pinot wines are described as full-bodied. A 2022 Nitteler Leiterchen White Pinot is classified as a dry quality wine.
History and vinification
The name Leiterchen is already listed in a study from 1976 on historical vineyard names on the Moselle as a Nittel vineyard site name, where it is assigned to the names related to the shape of the terrain. The wine education trail through Leiterchen provides information about the cultivation and growth of the Elbling as well as about the work carried out in the vineyard. For full-bodied Pinot wines from Nitteler Leiterchen, an extended ageing on the lees is documented; a 2024 Chardonnay Herzstück was matured for nine months in barriques.
