Location and Classification
Leinhöhle lies above Deidesheim in the Pfalz and stretches along a south-facing slope. It is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® and is entered in Rhineland-Palatinate’s wine-growing register as a single-vineyard for the municipality of Deidesheim.
Topography and Soils
The wine-growing area is located at 120 to 140 metres above sea level and has an average slope gradient of 20 per cent. The soil consists of loamy sand and Buntsandstein (red sandstone), or loamy sand with sandstone scree.
Area and Grape Varieties
For the site, 19.00 hectares are given as the classified area; a further description mentions 17.89 hectares. The classified grape varieties are Riesling and Muscateller, with Riesling being cultivated in the vineyard.
Wine Style and Name
The wines are described as highly aromatic, with notes of peach and apricot, as well as balanced, distinctive acidity. The site is used both for medium-dry wines with residual sweetness and for powerful, dry wines. The name refers to the former cultivation of flax: “Lin” stood for flax or linen, while “Höhle” comes from “helde” for slope.
