Lay

Location and extent

Lay is an officially registered single vineyard in the municipality and cadastral district Senheim in the Mosel region. According to the 2024 wine-growing sites register, the vineyard area totalled 10.8 hectares. The vineyards lie above Senheim in the Mosel loop of Moselkrampen.

Relief, orientation and soils

The site, oriented from south to south-west as far as south-south-east, comprises terraced, steep and very steep sections with gradients of up to 75 per cent. In the upper part, remnants of a historical division of the vineyard, dry stone walls and exposed rock structures are preserved. The geological substrate consists of Devonian calcareous sandstones, siltstone and clay slate; the grey slate with a carbonate content enables soils with an almost neutral pH value. A local producer describes the subsoil as weathered blue clay slate.

Climate and cultivation

With prevailing westerly weather patterns, the slopes of Senheim are comparatively dry, as surrounding elevations deflect precipitation. A clay-rich layer can reduce drought stress, while shallow soils over rock can dry out significantly in hot summers. The side valley oriented towards the west and the relatively straight course of the Moselle ensure frequent air movement; in the higher parts of the Lay, stronger winds can occur. The steep slopes allow only limited mechanisation and require labour-intensive care of the sward. Spontaneous vegetation has been documented, along with species-rich sward mixtures as well as grazing of selected plots and fallow ground with Ouessant sheep.

Grape variety and wine style

A regional report names Riesling as the only grape variety in the Senheim Lay. Documented wines include dry, off-dry and sweet Rieslings, including quality wine, Spätlese and Auslese variants. Descriptions associate the wines with slate-driven minerality as well as peach and other yellow fruit notes. For individual wines, longer ageing on the lees and restrained vinification have been documented. The site was also listed on the 1897 Mosel wine map as one of the highest-rated wine-growing sites in the Mosel.
