Location and classification
The Kallstadter Kronenberg is located in the south-east of Kallstadt in the Pfalz. This single-vineyard site belongs to the Großlage Kobnert.
Soils
The Kronenberg is characterised by Vega soils formed from Holocene-deposited alluvial-fan loam. In addition, loamy sand and sandy loams are described, with mostly contained limestone gravel. The soil conditions vary within the site; 14.2 hectares of loess-derived soils and 22.7 hectares of soils from terrace sediment have been documented.
History
The name Kronenberg is linked to the Taunus family of Cronberg, who held property or ground rents in the surrounding area. Their interests in Kallstadt and Ungstein are recorded at least as far back as 1538. Wine from the Kallstadter Kronenberg is already documented for the year 1659.
Varieties and wine styles
Riesling is evidenced both dry and delicately off-dry. The corresponding Kronenberg wines are described as medium to full-bodied, structured and mineral. In the site, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and St. Laurent are also grown, harvested and matured. The Am Kronenberg winery documents for its wines a dry fermentation, gentle handling and an orientation as a companion to food.
