Krone

Location and Classification

Krone, often referred to as Waldracher Krone, is an officially registered single vineyard site in Waldrach in the Ruwer sector of the wine region Mosel. In the official vineyard sites register, it is listed under number 450155 and, for the 2024 harvest, comprises 7.9 hectares of planted vineyard area.

Site and Vines

A documented parcel is located on a steep south-westerly slope with an inclination of around 45 percent. The moderately deep soil consists of slate weathering and contains around 60 percent stones. For a Waldracher-Krone parcel, Riesling vines that are around 50 years old are documented, trained on single posts.

Grape Varieties and Styles of Wine

From the site, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Kerner and Chardonnay are documented. The Rieslings are vinified dry, with a delicate level of sweetness, and as Kabinett; a vintage from 2009 was described as Riesling Spätlese, delicate and lightly sweet. The local climate is considered cool and is associated with light wines and potential for ripeness.

Example of a Riesling from 2009

The documented Riesling from the year 2009 was hand-harvested and selected in the vineyard. It showed itself fresh and mineral, with notes of peach and citrus. The wine had 12.0 percent alcohol, 14.3 grams residual sugar and 6.2 grams total acidity. The must was processed gently without pumps, pressed at reduced pressure, fermented with pure-batch yeast at 13 to 16 °C, and aged on fine lees. The name Waldracher Krone goes back to the Low Middle German word for crane.
