Location and Classification
The chalk cellar is a vineyard site west of Kallstadt, directly below the forest edge of the Haardt foothills. In the vineyard register for 2024, it is listed as a single vineyard within the Großlage Feuerberg in the area of Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße in Pfalz. The planted area is 20.7 hectares.
Soils and Name History
The soils consist of loamy sand with sandstone rubble, and in places of slope debris over red sandstone. A documented soil profile in the Gewann Heide describes shallow, very stony, slightly loamy sand over weathered yellow red sandstone. The soil is lime-free, acidic, low in nutrients, very permeable and warms up easily.
The name is associated with lime-containing soil. A historical mention from 1583 describes the plot of land, presumably, as crumbly soil; in 1784 the name “Kreedkeller” is documented and is interpreted locally as an indication of lime deposits or lime extraction.
Riesling
A Riesling from the chalk cellar, classified as a Qualitätswein and described as dry, is documented. The 2023 vintage is described as a fresh, mineral wine with clear fruit, vibrant acidity and an elegant, generally light to medium-bodied structure.
