Kirchberg

Location and Classification

Kirchberg is a legally registered single vineyard in Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach in the Palatinate. According to the 2024 vineyard directory, the vineyard area comprises 60.8 hectares. Kirchberg is assigned to the Gleiszeller side and lies towards the foothills of the Palatinate Forest. In the official vineyard directory, the site of the Großlage Kloster Liebfrauenberg is assigned to the area of the Südliche Weinstraße and the wine-growing region of Palatinate.

Soil, Orientation and Climate

The steep site, oriented towards the south-east in the direction of Gleiszellen, has been shaped around a larger limestone knob. The geological subsoil consists mostly of shell limestone with interspersed marl layers. At night, cool air flows from the Palatinate Forest into the vineyards, while the days are sunny and warm.

Vines and Wine Style

The steep slope requires deep rooting so that the vines can reach nutrients. The documented slow ripening is associated with varieties that develop late. On Kirchberg, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder), Riesling and Silvaner are planted; on the Gleiszeller Kirchberg, Yellow Muscat (Gelber), Red Muscat (Roter), Golden Muscat (Goldener) and Rosé Muscat (Rosé-Muskateller) are also documented.

Wines from Kirchberg are described as having a mineral character, fine acidity and sustained fullness. A Gleiszeller Kirchberg Scheurebe is documented as a residual-sweet Kabinett wine, whose profile is linked to the limestone soil. A Gleiszeller Kirchberg Riesling is documented as a dry Spätlese from the limestone soil.

Historical Reference

Local tradition places St. Dionysius on Kirchberg, also called Hatzeiberg, and mentions use by both denominations from 1565. For the early 18th century, vineyard-owning properties are recorded there. In Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach there was a tithe cellar from 1764, which from 1903 was used as the cellar of the winegrowers’ cooperative.
