Location and classification
Karlsberg is a legally registered single-vineyard site in the district of Oberemmel within the municipality of Konz. It belongs to the Saar area of the Qualitätswein region Mosel and is assigned to the Großlage Scharzberg.
Area and topography
The official vineyard site directory lists Karlsberg in the cadastral district of Oberemmel as having 40.6 hectares of planted vineyard land. A documented parcel lies between Oberemmel and Krettnach in the Conzer Tälchen on a west-facing slope.
Soils and vines
For this parcel, warm, reddish-grey slate soils are described, as well as vines with an age of more than 60 years. Yields there are at less than 40 hectolitres per hectare. For wines from Oberemmeler Karlsberg, Riesling is documented.
Wine styles and history
Documented Karlsberg Rieslings are produced dry as well as semi-dry or sweet, including Riesling Spätlese. A Riesling was fermented slowly using vineyard-native yeasts and stored for a longer period before bottling. The Oberemmeler Karlsberg is also shown on a historic Mosel wine-growing map from 1906.
