Location and classification
The Kapellenberg is a formally registered single vineyard site in Treis-Karden, in the cadastral district of Treis, and in the Mosel wine-growing region Mosel. It belongs to the Großlage Rosenhang and the area of Burg Cochem. The 2024 vineyard list shows 9.6 hectares of planted vineyard area for this site.
Landscape and viticulture
The Treiser Kapellenberg is associated with the Zillesberg and the slope around the Zilleskapelle. The vineyards are described as sunny steep slopes with gradients of up to 70 percent. Slate and slate weathering soils shape the local descriptions of the ground. Due to limited use of machinery, most work in the vineyard and the grape harvest is carried out by hand; late picking and selective hand-harvesting are also documented.
Grape varieties and wine styles
For the Treiser Kapellenberg, Riesling is documented as the grape variety. The listed wine styles include Riesling Qualitätswein dry, Riesling Spätlese half-dry or fine off-dry, as well as Riesling wines with an indication of noble sweet.
Name and cellar work
The name Kapellenberg is among the Mosel site names that are associated with religious veneration and chapels or places of devotion. The Zilleskapelle, located on the slope of the Zillesberg, has been documented since around 1100 and again in 1257; the chapel and the hill are named after the holy Cyriacus. For wines from the Treiser Kapellenberg vineyards, gentle processing of the grapes and controlled fermentation are described. At the Castor winery, fermentation of the grape varieties, including grapes from vineyards in Treis, takes place in a stainless-steel tank with temperature-controlled cold fermentation.
