Location and classification
The Kapellenberg is an officially registered single vineyard in Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the winegrowing region Pfalz. It belongs to the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area and to the Großlage Meerspinne. The hillside, which faces south-east, lies above the settlement at around 165 to 185 metres above sea level, with a slope gradient of roughly eight percent.
Climate and soil
At night, cold air flows out from the adjacent Pfälzerwald. As a result, the temperature range between day and night increases, contributing to a comparatively cool site climate. The soil consists of red Bunter sandstone scree and rubble over limestone; the topsoil is comparatively light and well drained.
Grape variety and wine style
For the VDP-classified site, Riesling is specified. With the Kapellenberg, cool, taut Rieslings are associated, with a strong herbal character, which also show spicy and mineral traits.
Classification and cultivation
The Kapellenberg is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; the VDP site profile lists a classified area of 34 hectares. The name refers to the Nikolauskapelle chapel below. For the plot of A. Christmann, planting years of 1989 and 2004 are given, along with a fully selective hand harvest in small crates. The associated wine is fermented spontaneously and aged to around two thirds in large wooden casks.
