Location and topography
The Brauneberger Kammer is a single vineyard in Brauneberg on the Mosel and lies within the Brauneberger Juffer wine-growing area. The area covers around 3,800 square metres. It is situated on a ridge below a distinctive rocky outcrop and, as an exposed site, receives sunlight from morning to evening.
Soil and viticulture
The soil consists of dark Devonian clay slate with deposits of iron, giving the rock a bronze-coloured appearance. According to the documentation, the rocky outcrop above contributes to thermal effects and to water availability. The Kammer is a monopoly vineyard, in the exclusive possession of the Paulinshof estate.
The grapes are harvested by hand. Limited yields and strict vine pruning are intended to produce Riesling grapes with small berries and concentrated aromas. The wines are made through selective hand-harvesting, gentle processing, natural maturation, and a cautious use of traditional and modern cellar techniques.
Riesling and history
From the Brauneberger Kammer come Rieslings that are referred to as Großes Gewächs, Spätlese feinherb and Auslese. In the 18th century, the site was considered desirable and was disputed between monasteries and counts. On his European journey, Thomas Jefferson tasted in 1788 a wine described as a Kammer and noted its quality in his diary.
