Location and extent
Kalmit is a single vineyard site that extends across municipal boundaries in the winegrowing region Pfalz. It stretches from Ilbesheim bei Landau and the Arzheim district of Landau in the Palatinate. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Kleine Kalmit, which rises to 272 metres above sea level, near Ilbesheim.
Topography and climate
The site, documented as VDP.GROSSE LAGE KALMIT, is oriented to the south. It is located at about 240 to 272 metres above sea level and has a slope of 10 to 20 percent. The Kleine Kalmit is described as an isolated heat island above the cold-air lake around Ilbesheim.
Soils and grape varieties
The soils contain tertiary shell limestone, marl, loess and material deposited by flooding. Over this there is a comparatively thin humus layer. For Kalmit, Riesling, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented in particular.
History and wine law
A municipal map from the years 1767 to 1783 already records vineyards on the lower, south-facing slopes of the Kalmit. The protected, single vineyard site extending across municipal boundaries was established in 2008 and is recorded in the vineyard sites register as a legally defined designation for the areas of Ilbesheim and Landau-Arzheim.
