Location and climate
Kalkofen is a vineyard site in Deidesheim in the wine-growing region Pfalz. The site lies in a warm belt along the foothills zone of the Mittelhaardt. It has high average temperatures and low rainfall.
Topography and soil
The site, which faces south, has a moderate slope of 2 to 10 percent. The elevated location is considered well ventilated and is bounded to the north by a sandstone wall. The soil is characterised by limestone and contains loess-loam as well as marl-like clay; locally, limestone rubble also occurs. It is described as vigorous and has a medium water-holding capacity.
Vineyard area and grape variety
The classified vineyard area covers 4.92 hectares. The classified grape variety specified is Riesling. Kalkofen is classified by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
History
In the 15th century, a limestone kiln stood in the vineyard. This is documented as part of the origin of the name Kalkofen. In the 1828 vineyard classification, the site was recognised as outstanding.
