Kalkberg

Location and Classification

Kalkberg is a single vineyard site in Duttweiler, a district of Neustadt an der Weinstraße, in the Pfalz. The site belongs to the Großlage Pfaffengrund.

Climate and Topography

Duttweiler lies in a climatically favoured zone in the rain shadow of the Pfälzerwald. The Kalkberg is located on the south side of a loess ridge running from west to east. The south-facing site has a slope of around five per cent and lies at approximately 125 to 130 metres above sea level.

Soil and Grape Varieties

The soil is classified as a pararendzina made of loess over loosely packed calcareous marl. It has a high carbonate content and a high useful water-holding capacity. Spätburgunder is the classified and most important grape variety of the site; in addition, Riesling is documented there.

Classification and Farming

Kalkberg in Duttweiler is designated as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter. Bergdolt–Klostergut St. Lamprecht is listed as a winery for the site and reports on biological farming and ecological viticulture.
