Location and context
The vineyard site referred to as Hallgartener Jungfer lies to the east of Hallgarten. Hallgarten is a district of Oestrich-Winkel. Parts of the site were assigned to the district of Hattenheim from Eltville am Rhein; a municipal proposal from 2025 provides for these areas to be assigned to Hallgarten for wine-law purposes.
Topography and soils
The Jungfer is located in a small, wind-protected hollow with a comparatively gentle slope gradient of about 5 to 10 percent. The aspect ranges from south-east to south-west, and the altitude is roughly 200 metres above sea level. The soil consists of gravelly, sandy material of Quaternary origin with a high proportion of quartzite, as well as portions of loess and clay.
Climate and grape variety
The hollow position protects against cold winds, while the aspect promotes strong warming from sunlight exposure. The classified grape variety listed is Riesling.
Wine and classification
With this site, fresh, mineral, substance-rich and elegant Rieslings are associated. The VDP lists the Jungfer as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in Hallgarten with a classified area of 6.00 hectares. The name Hallgartener Jungfer is intended, according to a tradition, to be linked to Cistercian monks from the Eberbach monastery and a dedication to the Virgin Mary.
