Location and landscape
The Jesuitenhofgarten is a single-vineyard site in Dirmstein in the Palatinate. It lies within the built-up area close to the historic town centre and is partly enclosed by former town and monastery walls. The gently south-facing plot lies north of the historic Upper Town (Oberdorf) at an altitude of around 102 to 109 metres.
Microclimate and soils
The surrounding town and monastery garden walls create a distinctive microclimate. The prevailing soil is described as loam; in addition, loess with sand content and a proportion of light-coloured limestone are mentioned.
History and cultivation
Name and ownership are connected with a former Jesuit monastery. The former monastery is operated today as a winery, to which the Jesuitenhofgarten belongs. Winemaking has been carried out in the Jesuitenhof in Dirmstein since 1803. The site is exclusively in family ownership and is planted with Riesling and Spätburgunder.
Classification and wines
In the 2024 Rhineland-Palatinate vineyard register, the Jesuitenhofgarten is listed under number 821706 in the Palatinate wine-growing region, Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße section, as the Großlage Schwarzerde, for Dirmstein. The register states that there are 4.1 hectares of planted vineyard area; the producer describes the single-vineyard site as 2.5 hectares. A documented Spätburgunder from the Jesuitenhofgarten was produced as a dry red wine in the quality wine categories of Qualitätswein up to Spätlese.
