Location and Landscape
The Jesuitengarten lies on the northern edge of Forst in the Palatinate between the sites of Forster Pechstein and Kirchenstück. The vineyard facing east receives warming morning sun. An evening west-to-east breeze cools and dries the vines and helps the grapes develop healthily at high ripeness.
Soil and Area
The vineyard site has a slope of 4 to 7 per cent and lies at approximately 100 to 145 metres above sea level. The soils comprise sandy loam with lime, sandy loam with limestone rubble, sandstone rubble, basalt weathering and, in places, humus-rich components. The classified area covers 6.85 hectares; the total area is given as 6.96 hectares.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
Riesling is documented as the grape variety in the Jesuitengarten. The Rieslings produced from it are associated with fine texture, elegance, and a balance between fruit and a mineral character. A Riesling replanting in a parcel took place in 2010.
History and Context
The name refers to former holdings of the Jesuit monastery in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. In the Bavarian vineyard classification of 1828, the site received the second-highest rating. The VDP lists Jesuitengarten, Forst as VDP.GROSSE LAGE.
