Location and classification
Hohenrain corresponds to the Erbacher Hohenrain above the historic centre of Erbach, a district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau. The vineyard area borders vineyards of the municipality of Kiedrich and is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Topography and climate
The south-west-facing slope lies at around 110 metres above sea level and has an incline of approximately 15 per cent. A three-metre-high wall on the west side protects against cold winds, stores warmth and allows sunshine until the evening.
Soil and grape variety
Löss loam is documented, as well as deep löss loams and tertiary marl soils with good water supply. The classified vineyard area covers 16.43 acres; Riesling is designated as the classified grape variety. The Riesling wines associated with this are described as having acidity and fruit.
History of the name
The site was documented in 1519 as Wingart de Reyngen and from 1543 onwards as Hohenreine. The name refers to a Rain, that is a slope at the edge of a field; Hohen refers to the elevated position and the proximity to the vineyards of Kiedrich.
