Location and Climate
Hoheburg lies to the west of Ruppertsberg on a small elevated plateau at the edge of the village. The vineyards of Ruppertsberg are protected by the Haardt and benefit from a mild climate with many sunny days. For Hoheburg, favourable microclimatic conditions are also described.
Relief and Soils
The elevation is 160 to 170 metres above sea level, and the slope gradient is 0 to 12 percent. The aspect is given as N–S/O–W. The soils are described as loamy sand or sandy loam with fine proportions of limestone; in addition, white, exposed Buntsandstein is mentioned.
Cultivation and Classification
The classified area of the Ruppertsberger Hoheburg comprises 20.81 hectares. The VDP lists Riesling as the classified grape variety and assigns the site as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® . This classification is a VDP classification and not a statutory German vineyard classification. For Hoheburg parcels, selective hand-harvesting in small harvest crates and a yield of 40 hectolitres per hectare are given.
Wine Style and History
A Hoheburg P.C. Riesling from the 2024 vintage is described with 12 percent alcohol, 6.2 grams of acidity and 3.2 grams of residual sugar per litre; on the palate, it shows itself mineral. A Riesling Kabinett from the Hoheburg of the 2025 vintage has 11 percent alcohol, 31.7 grams of residual sugar and 7.4 grams of total acidity per litre, as well as a pronounced bouquet and a distinctive acidity. For this Kabinett, bottling under protective atmosphere as well as ascorbic acid, potassium polyaspartate and sulphites are mentioned.
The name Hoheburg refers to an earlier castle that was associated with the knights of Ruprechtsburg. The place name Ruprehtesburc is documented for the year 1164; the castle was destroyed in the 14th century.
