Hölle

Location and Aspect

The Hölle is located in Wiltingen in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine-growing region along the Saar valley. The vineyard site is oriented to the south as far as south-southeast, lies at an altitude of around 140 metres and has a slope of 30 to 60 per cent.

Soil and Climate

The site is described as warm and shaped by heat. Its soil consists of grey slate, specifically medium- to deep-rooted grey slate with clay content.

Vines and Cultivation

The Vereinigte Hospitien foundation winery owns the site of around 1.5 hectares entirely on its own; the VDP lists a classified area of 1.89 hectares. In the small terraced vineyards grow Riesling vines that were planted in 1902 and are ungrafted. Riesling is the grape variety classified by the VDP.

Classification and Wine Style

The Hölle is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and is included in the Rhineland-Palatinate wine sites directory for the 2024 vintage. The site is suitable for powerful dry Rieslings as well as for off-dry and noble sweet wines. The name is derived from the Middle High German word for a steep hillside.
