Hinterkirch

Location and Name

Hinterkirch is a vineyard site in Assmannshausen, a district of Rüdesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau. The name is derived from the site located behind the church of Assmannshausen.

Classification and Landscape

Under the Hessian delimitation of vineyards, Hinterkirch is a single-vineyard site (Einzellage) in the cadastral area of Assmannshausen within the Großlage Steil and the Rheingau-Johannisberg area. The site forms a steep slope facing south-west.

Soils and Area

The soil consists of Taunus quartzite, which is overlaid with gravel and loess. A local wine reference gives the total area as approximately 15 hectares; the VDP classifies 1.27 hectares of this as VDP.ERSTE LAGE.

Grape Variety and Wine Style

The most important and almost exclusively planted grape variety is Spätburgunder. The wines from Hinterkirch show intense fruit and a firm acidity, which supports a longer ripening period.
