Himmelreich

Site and extent

The single vineyard Himmelreich is located in the south-eastern part of the municipality of Herxheim am Berg in Pfalz. It covers approximately 40 hectares and is situated on a vineyard slope that falls to the south, with a southern aspect. In spring and autumn, the sunlight strikes the slope almost perpendicularly.

Soils and grape varieties

The soils consist of tertiary limestone weathering material, loess and sandy loams. Within the site, they vary considerably. As established grape varieties, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder have been documented.

Wine character and cultivation

Wines from Himmelreich are described as having fine fruit, an elegant body and lively texture. Part of the single vineyard lies within the walls of the former monastery property Weingut Schumacher. A documented Spätburgunder from the 2022 vintage was aged in wooden casks, including French oak.

Historical context

Himmelreich is an officially recognised single vineyard of Herxheim am Berg. Following the 1971 wine law reform, which reduced the number of designated wine sites, it was retained as one of three single vineyards in Herxheim.
