Location and Classification
Herzfeld is an officially recognised single vineyard (Einzellage) in the cadastral district of Leistadt in the city of Bad Dürkheim in the Palatinate (Pfalz). The vineyard lies between Leistadt and Weisenheim am Berg to the east of the L517 at 49,501753714843° north latitude and 8,1597792369566° east longitude.
Soil and Area
As the subsoil, limestone soils are described. The 2024 vineyard register records 13.4 hectares of planted vineyard area; a regional tourism description gives an area of 13.7 hectares. The single vineyard carries the vineyard register number 820714.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
For Herzfeld, Riesling is documented, along with wines with mild acidity. In addition, red Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) from the named site are also documented. A Herzfeld Chardonnay 2023 as well as a red Riesling 2023 are described as dry.
Name and Maturation
The name Herzfeld is derived from “Hurzfeld”, which is associated with hare hunting in earlier times. The documented Herzfeld Chardonnay 2023 was matured in French barriques, about 50 per cent of which were in new barrels.
