The Herrgottsacker is a vineyard site in Deidesheim in the Pfalz. The site is documented as Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker and is classified by the VDP as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. For this classification, Riesling is specified as the grape variety.

Climate and Topography

The site is described as a warm, open vineyard site of the Mittelhaardt. It lies at an elevation of 120 to 200 metres and has slopes of 5 to 20 percent. The exposures include east, north-south, south and south-east as well as east. The eastern part is flat, while the terrain rises in the west up to the edge of the forest.

Soils and Vineyard Areas

The documented materials include sandy loam, loamy sand, Bunter sandstone, limestone gravel and slope gravel. In the sloping area, loamy sand with some gravel and limestone gravel is described. The classified area comprises 92 hectares. The stated composition of grape varieties consists of 84 percent Riesling, 9 percent Merlot and 7 percent Spätburgunder.

Wine Style and Name

Wines from the lighter, stony soils are described as fruity and harmonious, with balanced acidity. Limestone-rich upper parcels produce fresh, mineral wines; red grape varieties ripen early on the well-draining soils. The name Herrgottsacker is derived from the historical term Gottesacker for a churchyard or cemetery.
