Location and classification
Herrenletten is designated as a single-vineyard site, Haardter Herrenletten, in Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the Palatinate. It belongs to the Großlage Meerspinne. In the wine sites directory, Herrenletten is listed as a single-vineyard site; the VDP classifies Haardter Herrenletten as VDP.First Lage.
Topography and soils
The classified area covers 15.00 hectares. The site is oriented from south to south-east, lies at an altitude of 180 to 190 metres and has a slope gradient of 5 to 10 per cent. The soils are described as calcareous loam and Bunter sandstone; a technical description mentions sandy loam with marly clay and limestone inclusions.
Grape varieties and wine profile
The classified grape varieties given are Riesling and Weißer Burgunder. A documented Herrenletten Riesling from Weincampus Neustadt was produced as a dry Palatinate Riesling. The aromas described are peach, apricot, passion fruit and ripe apple; the wine showed integrated woody aromas. The 2018 vintage was documented with 13.0 per cent alcohol, 1 g/l residual sugar and 6.6 g/l total acidity.
Name and viticulture
The name Herrenletten combines a historical and a geological reference: “Herren” refers to medieval noble landowners, “Letten” to the type of soil. In an organic viticulture research programme at the State Winery Neustadt, in 2011 around 3.3 hectares in Haardter Herrenletten were included. The trials addressed vine health, soil management and nutrient supply.
