Location and Classification
Erdener Herrenberg is an officially listed wine-growing site in Erden in the wine-growing region Mosel. The site is located above the Erdener Treppchen and is bounded upstream by the Erdener Treppchen and downstream by the slopes of Kinheim’s Hubertuslay. The Herrenberg is already recorded on a historical wine-growing map of the Mosel from 1906.
Topography and Soil
Erdener Herrenberg lies at the upper edge of the Moselle valley at around 250 to 310 metres above sea level. A documented parcel has a south to south-west exposure and a slope gradient of around 35 degrees. About 85 percent of the soils are described as grey slate weathering soil; they are shallower than the soils of the adjacent Kinheim’s Hubertuslay.
Climate and Viticulture
The elevated position, according to the description, creates a cooler and windier microclimate than in lower-lying sites. For vineyards with the involvement of the Herrenberg, work by hand, balanced yields, site-adapted canopy management, and soil care are documented.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
Riesling is documented from Erdener Herrenberg. Among others, ice wine, Auslese, dry-ish late harvest, dry-ish Kabinett, and Sekt Brut are evidenced. In warm, dry years, the Rieslings of the site are described as particularly mineral, complemented by fruit notes and a ripe, fine acidity. For a Riesling ice wine from the 2024 vintage, the frozen grapes were harvested on 14 January 2025 at minus 8 degrees Celsius with 145 degrees Oechsle; the wine was fermented with 210 grams of residual sugar per litre.
