Location and terrain
The Herrenberg lies south of the village Enkirch in the Mosel wine-growing region. The slopes facing south-west have a gradient of 20 to 60 percent.
Soil and climate
The site is characterised by deep soils with Devonian grey slate. The municipality describes the Herrenberg as a moderately moist vineyard site.
Grape varieties and wines
Riesling, Spätburgunder and Merlot are planted in the Herrenberg. In addition, Rivaner and other red varieties are grown. The wines are described as powerful and suitable for longer ageing, with the site being associated above all with Riesling.
History and wine law
The parcel Nonnengarten belonging to the Herrenberg was in the possession of the monastery of Machern, which received it in 1336 and 1338 by a donation from the Lords of Eltz. The Counts of Sponheim owned vineyards there and in other Enkirch sites since around 1250. The Herrenberg is listed in the wine sites directory for Rhineland-Palatinate 2024 as an officially recognised site for Enkirch. A 2017 Riesling sparkling wine grower’s Sekt with the designation Enkircher Herrenberg was produced as a German Sekt and matured on the lees for 36 months.
