Location and Classification
Heiligen Kirche is a legally registered single vineyard in Bockenheim an der Weinstraße, in the cadastral district of Großbockenheim and in the wine-growing region Pfalz. The site belongs to the Großlage Grafenstück. In the 2024 vineyard register, it is listed under plot number 820202 with 24.7 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Topography and History
The vineyard area lies on the hillside above Bockenheim. In its centre there is a historic chapel, from which the name Heiligenkirche is derived. The chapel is dated to the 14th century; earlier references are attributed to the 7th century. Stony calcareous soils are documented for the slope.
Grape Varieties and Wines
Riesling is bottled under the name Bockenheimer Heiligenkirche as a dry wine from a single vineyard. Sauvignon Blanc and Spätburgunder are also documented in wines under the name Bockenheimer Heiligen Kirche. The wines from the site are described as dense and at the same time characterised by an energetic lightness.
Viticulture
For the vineyard section Weinberg Patricia within Heiligenkirche, a total of 418 disease-resistant vines were planted on 2 May 2009 from a crossing with Cabernet Sauvignon; in 2011, red grapes were produced there for the first time. The single-vineyard wines are read selectively by hand and limited to no more than 60 hectolitres per hectare.
