Location and Classification
Heilig Kreuz is a legally registered single vineyard in Edenkoben. It belongs to the Großlage Schloß Ludwigshöhe and to the Südliche Weinstraße area in the Pfalz. In the vineyards register, it is recorded as an approved designation for a narrower geographical origin.
Register and Area
The official vineyard register lists Heilig Kreuz under vineyard number 810804 in the cadastral district of Edenkoben and in the municipal district of Edenkoben. In the 2024 harvest year, 70.9 hectares were planted with vines.
Soil and History
The plot Heilig Kreuz lies at the foot of the Haardt. There, Bunter sandstone and deposits of rubble are overlain by sandy loam, loess and clay-rich sediments, which occur close to the surface in the area of Heilig Kreuz. The name is evidenced in an agreement dated 29 June 1551 concerning a water pipeline through the Heilig-Kreuz-Wiese meadow of the former monastery estate of Heilsbruck.
Grape Varieties and Winemaking
From Heilig Kreuz, dry wines made from Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Spätburgunder and Saint Laurent are documented. For a 2020 vintage of Grauburgunder from Weingut Damm, twelve hours of mash contact time, gentle pressing, fermentation in oak wood barrels and ten months of lees ageing in these barrels are stated. The 2018 vintage of Spätburgunder was fermented in traditional mash tubs and aged in oak wood.
