Location and Classification
In the wine-growing site directories, Hassel is listed as Hattenheimer Hassel. The vineyard site is located in Hattenheim, a district of Eltville am Rhein in Rheingau. It extends to the west of Hattenheim between Hattenheim and Eltville towards the Rhine.
Topography and Soil
The south-facing site lies at around 120 metres above sea level and has a slope of approximately 20 to 25 percent. The soil consists of deep loess and loess marl. The soils can store water well and also provide water in dry conditions.
Microclimate and Grape Variety
Hassel is protected from cold north winds. The soil’s ability to store heat contributes to the site’s microclimate. The VDP sites profile names an area of about 12 hectares; for the classified vines, Riesling is indicated.
Designation and Wine Style
Hassel is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. Wines from the site are described as full-bodied, powerful and juicy and have a specified capacity for ageing. The name is associated with hazel shrubs; the site was documented in 1273 and 1312 as „zu hasele“ and in the 19th century as „hasselt“.
