Location and soil
The Große Herrgott is an officially classified vineyard site in Wintrich on the Mosel. It lies above Wintrich on the Geierskopf, overlooking the Mosel valley. Slate is cited as the characteristic soil; the amount of sunshine also counts as a factor in the site conditions of the vineyards.
Grape varieties and wine styles
For the vineyard site, Riesling is documented. The recorded, site-specific styles include dry Riesling and Riesling Kabinett.
Name and classification
The name goes back to an earlier chapel with a crucifix. The designation of the field has been documented since 1830; about a century later, the wine was officially referred to as Wintricher Großer Herrgott. In the official register of vineyard sites in Rhineland-Palatinate (2024), “Großer Herrgott” is listed under Wintrich.
