Location and Classification
The Große Hengelberg is a legally registered single vineyard site in the Dhron district of the municipality of Neumagen-Dhron in the winegrowing region Mosel. The site bears the official vineyard site code 410407 and forms part of the Großlage Michelsberg in the Bernkastel area.
Topography and Soil
The vineyard is located in the middle, central slope area of a hillside facing from west to south-west, in a side valley connected to Dhron. Blue slate has been documented for Riesling cultivation.
Vineyard Management and Wines
The Große Hengelberg is documented as a monopoly and, since the acquisition by the Dünweg family in 2018, has been farmed alone by Günther Steinmetz winery. According to historical and viticultural records, the slope has been under vines for centuries.
Riesling Styles
From this site, dry and delicately off-dry Rieslings are produced; in addition, a sweet Riesling Auslese has also been made from it. For the documented vintage 2018, the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation and was left on the lees until bottling.
