Grainhübel

Location and Topography

Grainhübel is located on the edge of Deidesheim towards Forst in the Pfalz. The south to south-east facing site, with a relatively gentle slope, shows a gradient of between 0 and 30 percent. The profiles cite altitudes of 105 to 125 metres, as well as another area of around 125 to 150 metres above sea level.

Soils and Classification

The soils consist of weathered Buntsandstein, sandy loam and loam. Basalt components, marl-rich clay and tertiary limestone are also present. The VDP profile describes an area of 5.4 hectares; the classified area comprises 4.00 hectares. Grainhübel is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE; the designated grape variety is Riesling.

History and Wine Style

The vineyard was first documented in 1412 under the name “an der Gryne”. Associated with the site are Oberer Grain, Grain Chaussee, Grainhübel and Unterer Grain. In the 19th century, Grainhübel was considered, according to the wine expert Johann Philipp Bronner, to be the best site in Deidesheim. Documented wines from the site are dry Rieslings; a Riesling GG is fermented spontaneously and aged on the lees in French oak barrels.
