Location and classification
Grafenberg is a registered wine-growing site on the Mosel. It is linked with Piesport and with the Dhron district of Neumagen-Dhron. In terms of wine law, the site belongs to the Mosel wine-growing region, Bereich Bernkastel and Großlage Michelsberg. In the wine-growing sites directory of Rhineland-Palatinate, Grafenberg is listed as a single site (Einzellage).
Classification and natural conditions
According to the VDP, the Piesporter Grafenberg is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The area described according to the VDP is oriented south-south-east, lies at an altitude of 120 to 200 metres and has slope gradients of 50 to 75 percent. The soil consists of red Devonian slate.
Grape variety and cultivation
For the VDP-classified Grafenberg, Riesling is specified. VDP estates working there include Weingut Haart and Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt. The classified area comprises 17.30 acres.
Wine styles and history
From the Piesporter Grafenberg, Riesling Kabinett and Riesling Spätlese are known. A Piesporter Grafenberg Riesling GG from the 2020 vintage by Weingut Reinhold Haart was described as bone-dry with less than 4 grams of residual sugar per litre, and was fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks until bottling in August 2022.
