Location and classification
Goldlay lies on the right bank of the Moselle opposite Reil on the Hunsrück side of the river. The vineyard stretches above the Moselle from the Graubach trough towards the woods. To the south, the area of Graubach borders on it; downstream, Goldlay ends a few hundred metres away.
Terroir and climate
The west-facing to partially south-west-facing aspect and a documented slope of around 50 to 70 percent shape the site. Goldlay receives evening sun until sunset. Ventilation allows the vines to dry quickly after rainfall. The soils are documented as blue-grey slate with red loam and gravel.
Wine-law classification and grape variety
Goldlay is one of four single vineyards of Reil within the large vineyard of “Reiler vom heißen Stein” in the wine-growing region Mosel. From the site, Riesling is documented.
Cultivation and wine styles
For a documented Reil Goldlay Riesling, ecological certification has been stated since 1995, biodynamic preparations since 2009 and Demeter certification since 2013. The grapes were harvested by hand in small crates. Documented wines include fruity-sweet Riesling Spätlese and intensely sweet Riesling Beerenauslese. For the Spätlese, natural must sedimentation and predominantly traditional fermentation in large wooden casks of around 1,000 litres are described; smaller glass or stainless-steel containers are used for quantities that are small in the case of the noble-sweet wines.
