Location and classification
The Rauenthaler Gehrn is located in the Rauenthal district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau. The legally registered wine-growing name is Rauenthaler Gehrn; the geographical register assigns it to the Rauenthal cadastral area. The vineyard site has been entered in the Hessian register of recognised geographical denominations and is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
Topography and soils
The south-facing site lies at around 150 to 180 metres above sea level. Its slopes reach an incline of up to 55 per cent. The soils are described as quartzite slate with windblown loess. In addition, medium- and deep-rooting phyllite soils, small areas of sericite gneiss and deep loess loams are mentioned.
Varieties and wine character
The classified vineyard area comprises 16.24 hectares. Riesling is listed as the classified grape variety. The regional description links wines from the Rauenthaler Gehrn with a balanced ratio of acidity and aromas as well as good ageing potential.
Name and history
The name of the vineyard site was first documented in 1688 in the form ufm Giren. Gehrn refers to the wedge-shaped form of the site and is connected with the Old High German word Ger for spear.
