Location and landscape
The Gaispfad is a registered single vineyard site in the Traben district of Traben-Trarbach on the Mosel. The site is linked to the cadastral name Sertenmosel and covers a total of 3.6 hectares. It is terraced and shaped by projecting rock outcrops; in a documented parcel, parts exceed a slope of 75 percent. A documented parcel is oriented to the south-west and lies close to the Mosel.
Slate and microclimate
In the documented plots, deposits of grey and red slate rubble and dark slate soils can be found. The south-western orientation and the slate rubble store heat, while the proximity to the Mosel has a cooling effect during ripening. In the Prussian vineyard sites map from 1867, the Gaispfad was assigned to the highest quality class.
Vines and cultivation
In the Gaispfad, there are old, own-rooted Riesling vines. The documented age of the vines ranges from more than 60 to over 100 years. One plot is maintained as part of organic farming; in addition, there is a share in a producer association to preserve the steep slopes on the Mosel. Because of the steepness, the work in a documented plot is carried out by hand. After taking over the site in 2016, brambles and weeds were removed there, the vines were pruned and trained on new individual stakes.
Wine styles
From the Gaispfad, dry and delicately off-dry Rieslings, Kabinett, Spätlese and sparkling Riesling wines are documented. The Rieslings are described as mineral, with pronounced acidity, as well as smoky or stony notes, shaped by the slate. A documented wine was fermented spontaneously and cold, received an extended time on the skins, and matured by gravity in a double cask. Weingut Langguth refers to the Traben Gaispfad as a First Lage; this is a classification used by the winery.
