Site and Climate
Gaisböhl is an officially registered vineyard site in the municipality of Ruppertsberg in the Pfalz, at the foot of the Mittelhaardt. The south-facing site benefits from warm slope winds from the Mittelhaardt. It lies at an altitude of around 120 to 130 metres and has a slope gradient of roughly five percent. The average summer temperature is approximately 20 °C.
Soils and Area
The soils consist of terrace gravel, layers of loam and weathered Buntsandstein; the soil type is also given as sandy loam. They are permeable and warm up quickly. The classified area covers about 7.49 hectares. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf describes the total area as 7.6 hectares, of which 5.2 hectares are classified as G.C.
History and Classification
Gaisböhl has been documented since the 14th century under the name Geizebuhel. The name is associated with a former goat pasture on a hill. In the Royal Bavarian vineyard classification of 1828, the site was considered a top site in Ruppertsberg. The VDP lists Gaisböhl as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® for Riesling.
Cultivation and Wine
Riesling is the classified grape variety. From Gaisböhl, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf produces a dry Riesling G.C. The estate documents biodynamic cultivation, selective hand-harvesting of healthy and fully ripe grapes, as well as gentle pressing for the 2024 vintage. The G.C. wines ferment spontaneously and are aged exclusively in large wooden casks. The wines are described as having a substance-rich body, fine acidity and ageing potential, which are linked to the terrace gravel, loam layers and Buntsandstein.
