Location and classification
Funkenberg is a legally defined single vineyard site in the municipality and the vineyard district of Müden (Mosel) within the winegrowing region Mosel. The site belongs to the area of Burg Cochem and the Großlage Goldbäumchen. In the official register of vineyard sites, it carries the number 440120 and, according to the 2024 vintage year edition, comprises an area under vine of 25.3 hectares.
Aspect and soils
Funkenberg lies downstream (down the Mosel) from the village of Müden and faces south. It is described as a steep slope site. The predominant soils consist of sandy loam. The parent rock is documented as greywacke with quartzite inclusions; the stony, poor soils store heat.
Climate and wines
For the weather station at Müden, for the period 2018 to 2023, an average temperature of 11.6 °C and an average annual rainfall of 649 mm are given. From Funkenberg, Riesling bottlings are documented in the styles of Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and Eiswein, as well as in dry, off-dry, semi-dry, mild, sweet and noble-sweet styles.
Name and cultivation
The local explanation of the name refers to sparks that are produced when iron tools strike the stony ground during work in the vineyard. At least one documented parcel is grown on a trellis frame; another is listed in a notice of lease as vineyard fallow.
