Location and classification
The Frauenberg is an inter-municipal single vineyard site on the Moselle. It extends over the cadastral areas of Bremm and Neef at the narrowest bend of the Moselle. In the directory of vineyard sites, the site is listed as Mosel single vineyard number 440212; on the Bremm cadastral area 3.5 hectares are planted and on the Neef cadastral area 9.0 hectares are planted.
Relief and soils
The site, which is oriented to the south to south-southwest, falls steeply away, has slope gradients of more than 60 percent and is cultivated up to the ridge. The soil consists of grey Devonian slate with inclusions of more clay-rich deposits of slope scree. Visible rock outcrops and dry-stone walls shape the traditional viticulture structure.
Climate and vines
The slate slopes, oriented to the south, warm up slightly; the slate stores daytime warmth into the night. At the Frauenberg there are old vines, including partly own-rooted vines. Riesling is the predominant grape variety; in addition, Pinot Noir is also grown.
Wine style and name
Documented wines from the Frauenberg include aromatic Rieslings with high ripeness, as well as Rieslings from the Prädikatswein stages Spätlese, Auslese and Beerenauslese. The name Frauenberg is associated with earlier holdings of a nearby nunnery or monastery.
