Forst in the Edesheim wine-growing region
The Edesheimer Forst is a single vineyard site in the municipality of Edesheim in Pfalz. The vineyards lie near the Palatinate Forest on the western edge of the Edesheim wine-growing region.
Climate, terrain and soils
Edesheim is described as particularly mild. For the town, around 620 millimetres of rainfall, roughly 2,000 hours of sunshine and an average annual temperature of 11.1 degrees Celsius are given. The areas of the Edesheimer Forst consist of about 70 per cent hillside sites and 30 per cent flat terrain.
The soils range from sandy loam to loamy sand and contain, in part, loess loam. In addition, marl, limestone and clay are mentioned.
Vines and wines
A vineyard description documents an area of 5.2 hectares. In the Edesheimer Forst, among others, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Dornfelder and Dunkelfelder are planted. Documented wines from the site include dry Chardonnay, dry Gewürztraminer, dry Riesling and dry Grauburgunder Spätlese.
Origin of the name
The name Forst is explained historically as referring to a princely hunting and timber area, as well as to clearing in contrast to the municipal forest.
