Location and categorisation
Findling is a classified single vineyard in the Nierstein area within the Großlage Spiegelberg. It is located in the vineyard district of the municipality of Nierstein and is listed in the official register of winegrowing sites under number 721006. The 2024 harvest register shows 87.4 hectares of vineyard area. The site lies on the high plateau above the Roten Hang.
Soils
The regional profile of winegrowing sites records the following soil associations for Findling: loess / pararendzina and red sandstone / rigosol. The loess soil is calcareous, deep-rooting and consists of light-coloured loam with clayey silty material; it has a high usable water storage capacity. The red sandstone / rigosol is calcareous, stony and loamy and was formed from deposits of clay and fine sand from the upper red sandstone.
Grape varieties and wine style
For Findling, Viognier, Grüner Veltliner and Kerner are documented. The proportion of red sandstone / rigosol is used to create wines that show lively acidity and mineral elements and have ageing potential. The name Findling refers to a erratic boulder, described as a boundary marker between Alemannic and Franconian tribal areas.
