Location and designation
Felslay is a registered wine site in Mertesdorf in the Ruwertal of the wine region Mosel. The site is also documented under the name Lorenzhöfer Felslay.
Topography and soil
The Lorenzhöfer vineyards, which include Lorenzhöfer Felslay, are described as the steepest vineyards in the Ruwertal. The soil consists of slate clay (Tonschiefer) with quartzite inclusions and a thin layer of soil over the exposed bedrock.
Climate
The narrow Ruwertal is characterised by hot days and cool to cold nights. The slopes along the river release cold air at night.
Viticulture and history
Lorenzhöfer Felslay is in the sole ownership of the Karlsmühle winery. For the site, historical Rieslings are documented, including Riesling Auslese as well as dry and semi-dry Riesling Spätlesen. A historical Mosel viticulture map from 1906 shows the Lorenzhof and the surrounding wine sites, including the area associated with Lorenzhöfer Felslay.
