Location and classification
Falklay is an officially recognised single vineyard in the municipality and wine town of Reil in the wine-growing region of Mosel, and in the Bernkastel area. The vineyards are located on the left bank of the Mosel and surround the town of Reil.
Topography and soils
The site includes vineyards at different altitudes and with various slope aspects. As a result, within the single vineyard a clear variation in yield and quality is described. The characteristic rock and surface material is slate; in the local Mosel usage, “Lay” or “Ley” stands for slate.
Climate and vineyard areas
The sheltered Mosel valley and the heat storage of the exposed slate support the late ripening in autumn and the cultivation of Riesling. In the 2024 vineyard directory, Falklay is assigned to the large vineyard “Vom heißen Stein”. The site has vineyard number 411110 and comprises 17.5 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Wines and sub-areas
In Falklay, Riesling is grown. Dry as well as fruity-sweet Rieslings from the Prädikatswein categories Kabinett and Spätlese are documented. A Reil Falklay Riesling Dry from the 2017 vintage was fermented in stainless steel and aged on the lees for almost a year. Falklay is divided into numerous smaller areas, each named; their names go back to older field or local place designations.
