Location and classification
Engelsberg is a legally registered individual vineyard site in Herxheim near Landau, in the cadastral district of Herxheim, and in the wine-growing region Pfalz. The site is assigned to the district Südliche Weinstraße and the grand cru Herrlich.
Area and designation
The official vineyard directory lists for Engelsberg in the 2024 vintage edition an area of vines under cultivation of 25.5 hectares. The official vineyard number is 810703.
Soils and grape varieties
For wines from this location, loess loam, sand loam and calcareous marl soils are stated. Documented wines from the Herxheim Engelsberg include Riesling, Spätburgunder, Solaris and Cabaret Noir. A red cuvée includes Merlot, Spätburgunder and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cultivation and winemaking
For the Engelsberg Riesling from the winery Anton, every second bunch of grapes is removed by hand. The Engelsberg Spätburgunder is hand-harvested, with yields reduced, and is aged in wooden barrels. On a 25 ares plot planted in 2012 at the wine manufactory Alois Metz, Solaris and Cabaret Noir are cultivated; deep soil cultivation and the incorporation of rotted horse manure are documented there. An Engelsberg Solaris from the 2023 vintage was fermented spontaneously and aged in a stainless-steel tank.
